Click here for more than you'd like to know about Justin.
Justin Pendleton was born to a relatively wealthy family and spent his life in San Benito, California. After his parents separated, his father left for parts unknown and Justin lived with his inattentive mother. Justin maintained the outward appearance of a naive, tightly-laced scholar even as he began experimenting with absinthe, the poison of choice for the poets he admired. In the privacy of his room, he read poetry, philosophy, and, after taking Nietzsche's philosophies to heart, books on criminal science.
Justin attended Jefferson High School, where his introversion and academic talents earned him a reputation as a geek. His life took an abrupt turn when he found himself tutoring rich, popular Richard Haywood; the two boys, as different as night and day at first glance, discovered a mutual interest in crime and quickly formed a tight, almost symbiotic relationship. Richard relied on Justin’s knowledge, Justin on Richard’s ability to turn thought into action.
Even as Justin and Richard met, formed a suicide pact, and plotted the ultimate crime—a murder that would never be solved by the San Benito police—in secrecy, they kept their friendship under wraps. No one could know that they had a relationship that went beyond tutoring and bullying at school. After they fulfilled their murder plans successfully, killing a stranger named Olivia Lake, their lives became complicated by two women: Cassie Mayweather and Lisa Mills.
Lisa, one of countless girls to visit Richard’s bed, took an interest in Justin and asked him to tutor her. Justin’s lack of experience with girls made him vulnerable to her charms. In an attempt to woo the pretty, popular Lisa, Justin took her to his greenhouse and, in a moment of uncharacteristic boldness, kissed her. Richard wasn’t pleased with this development and took it upon himself to show Justin precisely what kind of a girl Lisa was by way of a video showing Lisa and Richard in bed--a move that created a gulf between the boys.
In the midst of this drama, Officer Cassie Mayweather was intent on connecting Richard and, later, Justin to a murder that was, as far as the rest of the San Benito police was concerned, solved and closed. Through dumb luck and a number of legally questionable maneuvers, Cassie managed to reveal their nearly flawlessly executed murder (Justin, unfortunately, had vomited while disposing of the body, inadvertently revealing his connection to the murder).
Justin and Richard, aware that they had been found out, resolved to end their lives—or so Justin thought. Richard attempted to worm out of the suicide pact by emptying his gun. Justin, plagued by a guilty conscience and determined to see the pact through, couldn’t shoot Richard and was prepared to end his own life when Cassie interfered. In the ensuing shootout, Justin was injured protecting Cassie and Richard fell to his death. Cassie tricked Justin into admitting that he had been the one to actually murder Olivia and, ignoring the fact that he had saved her life, had Justin arrested.
The movie's narration of events ends here, but this version of Justin has lived through what I deemed the logical aftermath of the movie. After his arrest, Justin was taken to prison. His trial was arranged quickly, due in large part to his parents' considerable financial resources, and Justin plead guilty to all charges. He was summarily convicted of premeditated murder and executed in California's gas chambers at the earliest possible date.
Abilities and Personality
Justin’s talents lie in the mental realm. He has extensive knowledge of criminal investigation techniques, an aptitude for planning, and an academic genius that makes him a brilliant student. Justin is also a talented (if largely untaught) philosopher. He enjoys defending philosophical positions that others would find morally unappealing, although his zeal for the idea of crime as an assertion of free will has been extinguished. Other talents include an ability to prepare absinthe, something of a green thumb where exotic flowers are concerned, and strategical genius. Justin is capable of forming ingenious plans and employing subtle manipulation under the right circumstances.
As a person, Justin is quiet and withdrawn, often preferring books and, now that he has largely overcome his aversion to bodies, corpses to human company. His primary interests are philosophy and crime, although his broad range of knowledge suggests a wide array of secondary interests (including classical music, gardening, and poetry). Justin’s personal philosophy was once incredibly stable, but, with its former foundations destroyed, it's prone to change and Justin occasionally finds himself contradicting his own ideas.
Justin has difficulties taking actions that contradict society’s expectations. He is a diligent study, polite—if somewhat awkward—when spoken to, and more inclined to think than to act. Justin lives primarily in an inner world, keeping the vast majority of his thoughts and ideas to himself (or in private entries). His reactions to external events are often subdued and passive, giving him a detached and occasionally emotionless appearance.
Justin’s interactions with others are, as a rule, hesitant and halting. While he’s capable of incredible eloquence, the presence of others seems to leave him tongue-tied—especially when the other happens to be the object of his affection.
For all of his quiet bookishness, shyness, and outward submissiveness, Justin isn’t fully innocent. Justin is capable of manipulating people and circumstances with great subtlety, although he is still overwhelmingly naive and will readily allow himself to be manipulated, used, and abused if he wants someone to like him. While a loner by nature, Justin is also painfully lonely; he desires friends and shies away from intimacy at the same time.
In the City
Justin entered the City on November 5, 2008 (City time), immediately following his execution in his home world. He was quickly reunited with Richard and spent his first weeks in the City sharing Richard's apartment. During this time, Justin sought a job with the City's police force, hoping to assuage his guilt by working against what he had worked for in life. He found himself employed in the forensics department under Abby's supervision, where he could utilize his knowledge of biology and crime scene investigation techniques.
Justin and Richard had a falling out, after which Justin was pulled from the City. He re-entered the City on December 20, 2008. Richard was still present in the City, but the boys were not on speaking terms and Justin moved into Apartment 14 in Building 3. He adopted a cat (Neith) to keep the ticking at bay and resumed his duties with the police force.
Without his all-consuming (and highly confusing) relationship with Richard, socially awkward Justin attempted to expand his social network. He grew closer to Abby, eventually coming to see her as the closest he could have to family--a surrogate sister. Justin also found himself in an odd friendship with Road Camelot, a dangerous girl with a philosophical outlook that closely paralleled Justin's own. Unlike Justin, however, Road was a master of her will--Nietzsche's Übermensch, the highest form of humanity. Stung by Richard's repeated betrayal and desperately clinging to the desire to reach his own full potential, Justin and Road formulated a plan that was, if anything, more sinister in nature than the one he had carried out in life.
Justin failed to go through with Road's plan, his shaky moral and philosophical beliefs crumbling under the pressure to kill again, and he had a complete breakdown after entering Road's dreamworld and watching the girl all but cut herself in half. His faith in the will to power--in forsaking society, in denying weak human emotion in order to transcend the limits of artificial morals--was destroyed, and the philosophies he had lived by shattered entirely. Abby helped him put himself back together, but Justin couldn't stop talking to Road. They were the only two people in the City he had trusted enough to reveal his sordid actions in life to, and that trust bound Justin to them.
Time continued to pass in the City. Richard left the City entirely, taking a part of Justin with him in spite of the fact that they hadn't been on speaking terms. Justin was empty, robbed of his philosophies and his other half, and he slipped into gloomy contemplations of life and death. He slowly rebounded as his ability to talk to people via the network increased, and he befriended--or came as close to being friends as possible--with a small number of people. Justin also developed a crush on Shilo, although he found himself completely unable to tell her as much. He did, however, tell her about his crime, and was immensely pleased when she didn't stop talking to him.
After a particularly painful curse, Justin came upon a number of realizations. He realized that his ordeal with Richard had changed him for the better, allowing him to truly feel rather than dismiss emotion as a weakness. While Justin still lacks a guiding philosophy, he has been able to let go of bitterness and embrace compassion, empathy, and other human emotions that he had previously deemed weak. This epiphany--the concluding step in a significant personal change--has altered Justin in a profound way, whether or not he has fully realized it.
Prior to a nearly-fatal illness and a handful of curses that targeted the City Dead, Justin's primary philosophical concern had been death and the nature of existence of the dead outside of the City. These curses helped Justin accept his own death, shed guilt and attachments related to his life, and view himself as a complete person who needs neither philosophy nor intimate friends to be whole.
Another unfortunate City event put Justin in the City's prison, where he was punished for his crimes. Justin managed to escape before the deities destroyed the prison, largely due to Road's help (he will need to repay her for her assistance in the future, naturally). Immediately after this, a curse encouraged Justin to confess his crime publicly. The combination of the two curses had a significant impact; Justin's guilt returned in full-force and brought further uncertainty and insecurity with it.
Some good did come from the curse, however. Justin revealed his feelings for Shilo under the influence of the curse and, much to his surprise--although he shouldn't have been surprised--she reciprocated his feelings. Life returned to normal for a time (or as normal as it can be in the City); Justin continued working with Abby (and Dexter, albeit reluctantly) in the police's forensics division. Something resembling a romantic relationship began building between Justin and Shilo.
All good things, however, come to an end. A rash of murders in the City, the disbanding of the police force, and Abby's disappearance from the City destroyed the relative stability Justin had achieved.
Currently, Justin lives alone (building three, apartment fourteen) and continues to take notes regarding murder victims, in spite of the lack of a formal police force. Shilo has become vital to his existence with Abby's disappearance; she is his closest contact and Justin loves her with a zeal that borders on obsession. Road continues to fascinate him, although he's very certain she has had a hand in virtually every violent crime in the City. Justin primarily devotes his time to writing up forensic reports (even if they serve no formal purpose), seeking more information regarding crime in the City than he has a right to know, resenting the deities, and taking care of his now-extensive collection of plants. His apartment has developed into an indoor garden, the foliage interrupted only by desks and crammed bookcases.
